Mercedes chassis and model numbers
Mercedes identifies vehicles by class, model, chassis, and engine. Looking at a current Mercedes catalog you'll see cars grouped as S-Class, E-Class, and so forth. Within the classes you have the actual models. For example, one of the S-Class models is the S500.
The S-Class has evolved over time. Each evolution is identified as a chassis. The S-Class cars in the 1970s were 116 chassis. The 1980s cars were 126 chassis. The 1990s cars were 140 chassis, and the current cars are 220 chassis.
The charts below identify the Mercedes models and classes, giving a breakdown of model numbers, model years, and engine and body types for each chassis.

Mercedes Sport Utilities — the G and M classes
Mercedes 463 chassis — the G-Class off road Mercedes
The G-Class cars were built by Daimler-Puch in Austria beginning in 1979. They were imported privately until 2001, at which time Mercedes Benz North America began distribution of the G500.
Originally customers could choose from four engine variants with Cabriolet or a Station Wagon bodies having short or long wheelbase. The range also included an open-top three or five-door military version with a long wheelbase and a canvas roof: |
230 G: four-cylinder petrol engine developing 66 kW/90 hp
or 75 kW/102 hp |
| 240 GD: four-cylinder diesel engine developing 53 kW/72 hp |
| 280 G: six-cylinder petrol engine developing 110 kW/150 hp |
| 300 GD: five-cylinder diesel engine developing 65 kW/88 hp |
None of the above models were officially imported although a number were brought in by Auto Europa, an independent importer.
The G-Class was launched under two different designations. Whilst in Austria, Switzerland and the COMECON countries it was sold under the "Puch" badge, in all other countries it came with the Mercedes three-pointed star on the radiator grille. The situation remained the same after a programme of restructuring at the Stuttgart-based company in 1981 saw the G-Class produced in Graz under contract and Mercedes assume full responsibility for product development. It is only since 2000 that the G-Class has been delivered worldwide with the Mercedes star.
