Repair of traditional Bentley and Rolls-Royce V8 engines at JE Robison Service

The early V8 engines are now 50 years old, and they are prone to develop some problems

  • All early Crewe engine are prone to oil leakage
  • Pistons and cylinders wear out and they burn oil, rap, and run poorly
  • V8 motors are vulnerable to spark knock and overheating, and may break pistons
  • Liner to block seals fail and they leak on the ground, and in some cases oil and coolant mix within the engine
  • Cams and valve trains wear out and the engines lose power.

In the later models the addition of emission controls added a new level of complexity.

Carburetor systems became very complex in the Shadow/Bentley T era.

Several versions of Bosch mechanical and electronic fuel injection were fitted to Crewe-built motors from 1980 onward.

The addition of engine driven hydraulic pumps in 1966 added a whole new system to maintain.

The arrival of turbocharging boosted performance and we started to see head gasket and top end failures for the first time. Those are much more common today.

The Rolls-Royce and Bentley 6.2 pushrod V8 engine was designed and built by the engineers in Crewe. It went into production in 1958 and a derivative remains in production as of 2018.

If your engine needs major repair or overhaul, or if you wish to undertake a cosmetic restoration in addition to mechanical overhaul we urge you to look at our company. JE Robison Service has considerable experience overhauling Bentley and Rolls-Royce engines. We can often repair motors that the factory would have condemned as junk. Our rebuilt motors perform better than when new because we fit modern pistons and employ modern machining methods and tools that were unavailable to the original builders in Crewe.

We can update engines to use modern valve and crank seals, and we can finish aluminum and steel components with better-than-new finishes. Our engines have won 1st place at Rolls-Royce Club of America national meets and we’ve won recognition at other major national shows.
